Another great show from October of ‘89, this one at the Meadowlands on 10/16.  There’s an okay matrix out there but this release from 2001 is easy to come by and sounds incredible.
The band held nothing back this night: essentially three openers, two first-set closers, and a Second Set that really couldn’t be improved upon as they dispense with formalities and open it with Dark Star … and things just get weirder and groovier from there.  Probably as good a way as any to cap off 1989 here (for now).

Twenty years!  The Dead weren’t really into celebrating milestones but they seemed to decide to be a good fucking band again in their twentieth year.  Not that they hadn’t been!  But the previous couple of years left a lot of heads with their lips pursed, wondering “hmmmmmm”.  Nineteen-Eighty-Five was something of a revelation, Summer Tour especially - great playing!  Adventurous playing!  Great shows!  Funnily enough (or not), the year started with Jerry getting busted in his Bimmer in Golden Gate Park, right on the heels of the band intervention … but Jer cleaned up his act, and heads on the rail (and his bandmates, to be sure) were surprised and delighted to see Father Christmas looking engaged in the proceedings for the first time in a while.  And the goods were delivered in kind.
If you’re not an ‘85 convert I’d recommend hitting up the next round of links!
